1 (20-ounce) can crushed pineapple, undrained
1 (21-ounce) can prepared cherry pie filling
1 (15 1/4-ounce) box yellow cake mix
1 cup (8-ounces) unsalted butter
1/4 cup coarsely chopped nuts, such as walnuts, pistachios, or peanuts, optional
